| Like other Asian countries, Hong Kong was in economic downturn in the past few years. The shifting of labour-intensive production bases into Mainland China has strengthened the Government's initiative to develop a value-added knowledge-based industry in Hong Kong. Biotechnology and Traditional Chinese Medicine are recognized as high value-added industries that Hong Kong should be paying further attention to. They will help the transition of Hong Kong towards a more knowledge-based and high technology oriented economy. | |||||||||||||||||
| Since HKIB's inception in 1988, we have built a number of internationally accredited state-of-the-art facilities with the financial assistance from the World Health Organization (WHO), the U. S. National Institute of Health (NIH) and the Industry Department (now the Innovation & Technology Commission) of the Hong Kong SAR Government. We are uniquely positioned as a local biotechnology landmark infrastructure to foster the development of biotechnology and Traditional Chinese Medicine at both local and regional level. Our in-house biologics manufacturing center and TCM production plant allow the production of these high-value technology-oriented products in Hong Kong. | |||||||||||||||||
| To facilitate the development of biotechnology, our institute houses an incubator center in which several biotech start-ups have developed their businesses with our common equipment and research facilities. These facilities, funded by the Government biotechnology initiative, reduced the capital investment by these companies and thus lowered their cost in starting a business. | |||||||||||||||||
| Being a full subsidiary of the Chinese University of Hong Kong, we also serve as the focal point providing a one-stop service to biotech industry. | Being the only multipurpose GMP accredited TCM manufacturing plants in Hong Kong, our contract manufacturing service / capability is recognized by a line of popular over-the-counter herbal products with our quality assurance label being on the boxes. Our in-house research team has developed another series of product which is now commercialized under the trade name ‘LifeArtTM’. | |||||||||||||||||
| In recent years, we have contributed to the success of the the local ‘western’ pharmaceutical industry by another initiative commonly known as ‘Pharmaceutical Technology Centre’. Through the scheme, more than 20 local pharmaceutical manufacturers received GMP training and the related technical support from us. They all attained and received GMP qualification from the Department of Health by 2003. | |||||||||||||||||
