The Hong Kong Institute of Biotechnology
Limited (HKIB) is a Company Limited by Guarantee and is wholly controlled
by the Council of the Chinese
University of Hong Kong. It is located on the waterfront of the Tolo
Harbour on CUHK campus in Shatin, the New Territories. |
| |
| Founded in 1988 with an initial endowment from the Hong
Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust, HKIB aims to be the leading force in promoting
the development of a biotechnology-based industry within Hong Kong and the
Asian region. Its mission is to advance applied academic research and to
provide the vital link between technology transfer and product commercialization.
|
| |
|
| |
Biotechnology and Traditional
Chinese Medicine (TCM) were identified by the Hong Kong SAR Government to
be two of the many locomotives for development of local knowledge-based
industry in the coming years. Since then HKIB has been granted additional
funds through the Innovation & Technology Commission to further equip
our in-house research and production capacity in these two particular areas. |
| |
|
| |
Our in-house facilities, including series
of cleanrooms, bioreactors of various production scales, purification equipments,
and various equipments for analytical, calibration and production purposes,
are designed and purchased to meet GMP (Good Manufacturing Practice) standard.

| |
|
| |
The access of our facilities, together with
our in-house expertise and operation, are open to biotechnology industry,
or entrepreneurs looking for turn key solutions to turn their own biotechnology-related
projects into intermediates for market evaluation, or even commercial deliverables.
Being a non-profit making organization, we provide our service and facility
access on a cost-recovery and pay-per-use basis. This is expected to lower
the entry barrier for entrepreneurs who want to go into the industry by
reducing their investment significantly on capital equipment, manpower,
spending on laboratory or factory space rental. |

We have established four teams to cater
for different industry needs: |

Though being a member of the Chinese University
of Hong Kong, we have a separate mechanism to ensure our operation integrity
with the ultimate goal of protecting your intellectual properties. Hong
Kong is famous for its transparent legal system and the rule-of-law spirit
in her community. HKIB, being part of the community, will uphold the spirit
without compromise. |
